The Cathedral and former Great Mosque of Córdoba, in ecclesiastical terms the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción , and known by the inhabitants of Córdoba as the Mezquita-Catedral , is today a World Heritage Site and the Cathedral of the diocese of Córdoba (...) (from Wikipedia).
The Mezquita : This mosque, converted into a cathedral, is one of Andalusia's most famous and important sites. The mosque was built in the 8th century, by the Muslim Caliph Abd ar-Rahman I. At the time, it was considered to be the most magnificent building in the Muslim world, and perhaps in the entire west. The famous sight of the forest of round, striped and colorful pillars, with the stone arches hanging over them, is very impressive. 856 pillars still stand here, creating 19 impressive passages. When the Muslim Moors were expelled from the Iberian Peninsula, the Christians turned the mosque into a cathedral. Parts of it were built as early as the 13th century. The orange tree courtyard, which has naturally been renewed many times since it was planted in the 8th century, actually leads to one of the Mezquita's main entrances.
Address: Calles Torrijos and Cardenal Herrero. The mosque is located to the south of the Railroad Station and to the north of the Roman Bridge crossing the river.
